Facebook Privacy Changes (part 3)

And this, takes the cake.

Yes, a basic set of information that looks like this:
indexing2
Oh, heck no!

My picture and my name.  Heck, that is on google already so I really don’t mind that.
I do mind that it shows a segment of my friends.
I am also a little uncomfortable with it showing Celebrities and Public figures.
It isn’t anyone’s business what products, services and stores I like.

I had already stopped becoming fans of every business, group, product and public figure months ago, because I am not even sure I want my Friends and Networks to see that stuff.  So, if you sent me an invitation to your business and I didn’t join it, nothing personal.

It is a privacy thing.

Facebook Privacy Changes (part 2)

In Facebook Privacy Changes (p1) I discovered my photos were compromised.  After that bit of unsettling news, I decided to check ALL my settings from top to bottom and everything in between.

Like I said, there went my morning.

privacycontact

These settings were not acceptable to me.  I do want everyone to be able to find me who are looking for me on facebook, that is the only way I would have been able to have coffee later this week with people from high school.  Some I have not seen in…well, a long, long time.

But, I don’t want everyone to know my current address, or my phone numbers or to even send me a message.

I also didn’t want applications that other people are using to have access to my information (those games and tests that compare me to you…)
apssites

See that “what your friends can share about you” after this morning, that is a big nothing.

Sorry folks.

authorizedsetting

and because I was feeling particularly violated after this ordeal…I deleted several applications I had previously given granted access.  Good Bye “family links”.  Goodbye “know it all trivia”.

After an hour of deleting and purging.

I felt much better.

To fix your application settings :

  • Head to Settings
  • Then to Application Settings (instead of privacy)
  • Select Authorized from the drop down menu next to the word Show:
  • Start deleting any application you no longer use
  • After you have purged that list check through each of the remaining applications and adjust your sharing settings next to each one
  • Also note that there is a photo and video  category in this menu as well
  • Once this list is cleaned up proceed to “Granted Additional Permissions” and edit those items as well

I hope that helps clear up some of the mess that the changes have presented for several casual facebook users.
Frustrating!

Facebook Privacy Changes (part 1)

This is at least a two parter, maybe more once I get going with it.

My day started simple enough, the only thing on my calendar was a blog post about a toy when I was a kid.
As I was checking my google reader at the office for my work related feeds (my personal feeds are on a different g-mail account so I don’t goof off in the office-most days) I ran across a blog post called “Is Facebook Really a Brand You Can Trust” and it got me thinkin’ about my privacy settings.

I had checked the basis when the “new” system was announced, but I didn’t dig deeper and I thought that I probably should…

and there went my morning.

photos

See that last one, my wall photos were tagged for EVERYONE to see as were the folder where I shared images of my son and family.  Photos used to have one setting, now each folder has a different one.  Anyone on facebook at any time could see images of my family, my pets, OTHER peoples pets and children.

Oh, this was very bad!
But, luckily, also very easy to correct.

Here’s how:

  • In the top blue banner next to your name is “settings” click that
  • then click on Privacy settings from the drop down menu
  • Then click on profile information
  • While in this menu, I would verify all those settings are to locked down to your degree of comfort*
  • scroll down to the Photo Albums and click on Edit Settings button
  • change the settings on each album, there is now a custom option that would be great for sharing with just certian groups (more on that in a later post)

Oh and while you are on that Profile information screen, be sure you have this box checked IF you want people to be able to post comments on your wall (instead of only being able to reply to comments on your wall)

allowfriends

Now that I have those changes made, I feel better about the information I have on facebook.

More comments on my facebook account on this one entry than any other.  Funny thing-almost everyone of them:
“I See it”

Of course you do, the feature doesn’t work like I thought it would.
ALL of my facebook friend see it.  Heck my friends of their friends see it.  That is just two shakes of a lambs tail from the whole darn universe seeing it.

It appears to be another useless feature.

The Season of The S!

j0438324

I am looking forward to the day that the 14 yr old plays soccer on the beach like this guy, now THAT is the way to watch soccer, on the beach!

Wow, I haven’t even started my post and I already got off topic-but that is exactly how I have been feeling the past couple of weeks (so perfect illustration of a point)

The Season of the S…
Sure thing!

  • Spring
  • Soccer
  • Spring Break
  • Social Media
  • Survey

This is what has me running around like a headless chicken in the barnyard!  Sure there are only 5 things on that list, but they are so much more involved than just the little bullet points, let me break it down for you, my sisters:

  1. Spring-Awesome, the good thing is renewed energy because there is so much more SUNSHINE! (another S word) but, Spouselet (again with the S) and I decided to start a small container garden this year-in addition to the CSA(community supported agriculture) we joined.  So, in the next few weeks I have to find containers to put this stuff in, I would love to use bourbon barrels, IF we can find some.
  2. Soccer-this is probably about 75% of my busy-ness.  The 14 yr old is now playing on 3 teams.  One for school and two competitive, luckily the school coach is incredibly laid back and realizes that it IS middle school soccer and no one is going to get a scholarship THIS year, so if you have something else to do, do it.  Because of the two competitive teams my son is playing in a tournament or at least one game every weekend until the first of June.  Sometimes more than one game.  But, this is what he loves-so we are supporting him in that.  I know in 5 years he will be off in college and I probably WON’T be able to go to every game, so I will now, while I can.
  3. Spring Break-is the time I am planning on working toward finishing the family room.  The 14 yr old is going out of town with one of his best friends for the week (ok, there might be a bit of stress there…him being at the beach with out his mother for a full week)  I don’t know who needs more prayers on that one, me so I don’t worry my head off, or him that he doesn’t do something 14yr old silly ;)
  4. Social Media-even with my self imposed ban on Twitter until Easter, I am up to my eyeballs in social media.  My full time job is with a real estate company and I am going to be teaching a class on Facebook this month.  Right now I have meetings every Tuesday (and one Thursday) in the month of April to travel around the state and teach this class.
  5. Survey.  At church I am on the communications committee and we are developing a survey to find out peoples interests and tallents so that they can get plugged in to the church and maybe serve in areas that highlight their skills.  I volunteered to write the survey.

Did I mention that the middle school soccer games were on Tuesday and Thursday in April and that I am the team mom?  I have to feed the boys before every game.  Oh yeah.   Oh and one more “S”, the Schedule-concessions for all the soccer games, I have to have parental volunteers-some of these parents would rather die than work the concession stand during a game, so I also get to herd cats.

And, that my dear friend, is why I haven’t been posting much.
I miss my blog.

What have you been doing in preparation for spring?

And don’t forget:  Subscribe in a reader, so you won’t miss me when I come back.

Facebook, more/less

I found this nifty little option on facebook the other day, and I have no idea how long it has been there, could be since the start of time.  However, I know that if I JUST saw it, then there are others in the same boat.

I mentioned it in an update and a few other people asked me about it so I thought I thought I would do a little post.

When you are viewing your news feed, all of your friends and their posted notes and articles and pictures, links whatever show up.  Some of them are not things you necessarily want to see.  (people not acting their age, in either direction)

If you mouse over the entry, a little options box appears.  (see it on the right, in the image below)

fb12

When you click on that you can determine if you want to give that person a higher priority or a lower one.  If it is a photo or a note, you can also list if you want those items to have a higher or lower priority.

fb2

So, If  you are friends with me on facebook and I post to much (because I sometimes think I do) then you can click on Less about Molly and push me on down the list!

I was missing most of my spouselets entries, and since I changed his priority, now, they are visible and I catch them all!

Attack of the Facebook Star

facebook1

The Spouselet calls me “design star” when my Interior Design Snob makes an appearance-He actually calls me {insert topic here} star about alot of different things.  Tonight, it would be my “facebook star” which is closely related to my “You aren’t leaving the house in that star” or (fashion star).

Earlier this evening I was browsing through facebook for people I went to college with, because, I am bored and it is just to late in the day for me to clean.

And let me tell you, it was interesting and because of what I saw, I have a few suggestions for those of you who have, or hope to have a profile picture on facebook.

  1. Pictures of your family are great.  But, when every other image is a family, in white t-shirts on a beach some where, you might want to rethink it.  Next year wear a denium shirt and lay in the fall leaves with your clan or Blach shirts in the snow!  (oops, those have been done too-just not as much, yet)
  2. If the last good picture you had of yourself was from your high school year book and you graduated 20 years ago, please do something about it.  Mullets are no longer cool and neither are your braces.
  3. Here is a minor suggestion to all of my Christian facebook friends.  Drinking in moderation is OK.  Being falling down drunk is not.  Having your profile picture be one of you swillin’ a beer with your eyes rolled back in your head and your cheeks “st nick” red-might be a problem-especially if you are the church secretary.   Heck, I don’t think that is a good idea even if you aren’t professing your faith on every line of your public profile.
  4. Facebook bans boobies for a reason-if you are boy, we still don’t need to see them, especially if they are larger than mine.
  5. after tonight, facebook should ban all topless shots, especially the ones of men squishing their bellies to show us just how big their beer gut really is.
  6. please don’t wear muscle shirts if your biceps are larger than your head, it looks really odd.

I think I am going to walk away from the computer now and clean my eyeballs with a light solution of bleach.
