Non-Typical Sunday

If this is the kind of stuff I run into when I miss church on Sunday, then I am not going to allow that to be a regular occurance!

Here I am minding my own business, reading my Google Reader Feed when I come to Seth Godin’s Blog and a post on Rock Stars . Which lead to the Lefzetz Letter which lead to an Everclear tune. Today, boys and girls, we will be covering ALL of those topics.

Let’s start with Mister Godin. I just finished reading Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us, his newest book and here is a small side bar to tell you that if you have NOT read it and you have a burning desire for change (ANY change) go get it now! I would give you my copy but-I have impressed myself all over it with pink highlighter and notes. In Tribes, Seth mentioned The Grateful Dead a couple of times and talks about how different they were and how they created a tribe and they did. I lived to tell about it and can even remember it-few deadheads can say that…but when you compare what Seth says about Tribes (and the dead) with what Lefsetz says about Rockstars (and Seth quoted) there is a disconnect. The dead DID do disco. They DID sell out, breifly-they stopped doing what they were good at for a breif period of time…However, they recovered and members of the tribe forgave them for it :)

Having gotten that off my chest, I feel so much better now.

Let us move on to Lefsetz post from October 10, 2008. I honestly agree with alot of his post. I feel his anger and I know it. We probably do not agree on all the ways to correct the issues facing us today but the man has a point:

Everybody’s on his own side, only speaking to himself, like-minded people. Who’s going to change the equation? Certainly not politicians, elected officials.

And

If you like what you hear, tell others. Not because I’ve got a financial interest, but because this is the only way we’re going to beat the traditional infrastructure, the only way we’re going to combat the profiteers who tell us we must make pop tunes so bland they can sell everything from toothpaste to movies. If you believe this, you’re not an artist, but a businessman. Nothing wrong with that, but people don’t believe in businessmen, they don’t want to see them ten years down the road, they use up their products like they’re deodorant and move on. People get excited about ARTISTS! People are loyal to ARTISTS! People pledge fealty to ARTISTS!

And now for Everclear. I have to inject a bit of a warning or disclaimer here because the point of this song is to make people think and evaluate what they really believe and where their faith and understanding lies. They do that with harsh language that may offend some of the people who read this blog…be forewarned.

The song is called Jesus was a Democrat.
Go have a looksie and hear it.
I will wait.

Again, I agree with alot of the general themes of this song. Jesus Christ was NOT blond haired and blue eyed althoug I do meet people on a regular basis that think that he was and that is why people in the middle east FLOCKED to him (not that his message had anything to do with it-garsh). I agree that if he were alive today, he would be sad to see not much has changed and I think he would certianly be angry about it. he probably wouldn’t be to happy with what people do “in his name”. And we (the universal we) would find a way to kill him all over again…because he does have the ability to infuriate a large group of people some of them might even consider themselves followers.

However, when you get to the parts about the bible saying he was a Democrat…yea…no. Not so much- I also don’t agree with the part about him being wanted by the CIA…and this is where the song totally misses the point-Jesus NOT being the political revoluntionary that some of his followers thought he SHOULD be led Judus to make a little extra cash. And he certianly wouldn’t wear a Che t-shirt anymore than he would have worn one with Ceaser back in the day. The thought of it kinda turns my tummy.

And now my son needs to head off to Youth group and I should really STOP writing on this…I would love to hear YOUR thoughts…Please post them!
