Two Firsts, One Post

This is the first video I have made and uploaded to youtube!
It is a quickie of the first altered book I made.

I want to start featuring more of the crafty me (girl on the left) and no time like the present!

Have you put any videos on youtube? Have you made an altered book?

Not bad for a first effort

In the Middle-Sisters

Today, I really was the girl in the middle! I had lunch with my mom and my sister-I am not the oldest OR the youngest-how perfect.

We went to Sisters Tea Parlor & Boutique!

I am not normally a fan of pink, but for a tea room, it works.

I am a fan of hot tea. (mine was some kind of chai-and very tasty) Even a bigger fan of hot tea that tastes good with OUT sugar or honey! I am also a HUGE fan of ginger snaps. Ever had a ginger snap with lemon curd? Well, you should. The cottled cream wasn’t bad either-I just love tart!

Aren’t the dishes and presentation of everything just precious?

The food was incredible-finger sandwiches, scones and deserts…to yummy.

We could have dressed up if we wanted-they have a room full of hats, furs and shiney jewelry…I can see little girls going totally nutso over this place.

Never a Good Sign

My son plays for the Thoroughbreds. His outdoor season, they did not win a single game. Which happens when teams are new and the players don’t know or trust each other…it all takes time.

Indoor season started this past weekend (my birthday actually) and Q promised me a goal. I told him that would be a fantastic birthday present!

Right before the game, I walked in and saw this:

I just HAD to take a picture of the toliet paper that shares a name with my son’s soccer team…It could go either way ;)

The game was hugely exciting. The other team was HUGE but our boys are finally starting to gel. And yes, my son scored a goal for my birthday, and then another-and another and by the time the final buzzer sounded, he had scored 7. The final score on the board was 13-3 but really another mom was counting and we scored 20-the referee quit marking our numbers.

I was proud of our team, they didn’t gloat, they didn’t talk about how bad their opponent was, they played the game, shook hands and got off the field. Having had such a rough season outdoors, I think they understood the other kids pain.

But, I still love my picture of the T-bred T.P.!

On Being 40 #6

I could totally keep this theme going for a full year now!
IMG00139.jpg
Today my family got together to celebrate my birthday. The picture above is of my presents and they were all awesome.

It is a tradition in our family to go around the circle before we bless our food and say one word about the person we are celebrating. No birthday person ever gets through it with out crying. Everything they said was totally cool, but the best was the 13 yr old calling me “The Best” (damn, can’t beat that) and the spouselet calling me “Gorge-a-licious”.

My grandmother also said (and I never really thought about it like this) I was the one who made her “Momaw” because I was (still am) the first grandchild. THAT was huge-my sister joked that she has been trying to catch up ever since.

Ok, enough of that, because I know you all are just dyin’ to know exactly WHAT those gifts could be!

First, I got a gift certificate to a local spa, Diva. I have been waxing my own legs for a while and got out of the habit so, I wanted a professional job to get me back on the right foot (or leg so to speak-heh.) I might also have enough to get a manicure as well-and since I quit getting my fake nails-woo doggie, I could use that too!

Then, I got the second most awesome thing-a sweetgrass basket. I love a sweet grass basket. There is so much history wrapped up into one and they are made in one of my favorite places on earth, by some of the coolest women. But, that is only part of the story. Last time the family was in Kiawah, I read a book called The Spirit of Sweetgrass by Nicole Seitz. And it is a fantastic story about a woman who makes sweetgrass baskets. She makes this one basket with bullrush and love knots and a lid-and that is what my aunt and uncle gave me for my birthday.

I cried.
I even made a bit of noise.
“It even {sob}has{sob}love knots{wail} on it!”
Perfect!

Now, if that wasn’t enough, first with all the awesome “name callin”-then the lex waxin’ and THEN the sweetgrass basket {sob} with the love knots…

It was time for the present from my sister and her family. Now let me just tell you, my sister is good at many a thing…teaching, leading women, doing TONS of service to the church and our community, but her claim to fame (second only to her famous laugh-which is a lot like mine) is her ability to make people cry (usually in a happy/good way).

Today, was no exception.

Her gift was that big clear paint bucket with all the slips of paper inside. She had my parents, and sunny and her kids write all the things that were cool about me and she put them on glittery paper and made them into scrolly confetti things…now that is just awesome. I didn’t read them when I was there because honestly-I done cried enough for one day thankyouverymuch. She said that when I am having a bad day and feeling “old” (because 40 IS ancient you know) I can pull my bucket out and read all those cool things.

I am kinda lookin’ forward to it.

What is the coolest gift you have ever gotten on your birthday?

In the Shelter of His Wings

is the name of the bible study that Liz Curtis Higgs presented for the past three Thursdays.

There were about 800 of us sitting in Middletown UMC and it was great fun.

I must have been living under a rock for the past 40 years because I have not read any of her books or studies before. I had no idea what a treat (and experience) it would be.

The study is one she developed while researching for a historical fiction novel that is based in Scotland but leans heavily on the themes of the book of Ruth. She also let us know that she will be doing this study as a DVD series-and when it comes out-you ALL have to watch it. It was awesome.

I am not just saying that because I was with some of my bible study girl friends from church either, the first week, I didn’t meet up with them and I sat by my self and STILL loved it!

I don’t want to get to much into the mechanics of the study because I really do want everyone I know online and offline to experience it for themselves.

But, I do think that I can say (with out giving to much away)- This is a book FOR the daughters, about the daughters and told BY the daughters of God.

Yeah.
That is exactly what it is!
So, mother, daughter, sister, friend-keep your eyes peeled for this one.

And I also just have to mention that if you EVER have the opportunity to see Liz live and in person, please do not pass it up. She is the kindest, most down to earth and humble woman-not to mention a wicked sense of humor…my kind of woman!

On Being 40 #5

Ok, Officially, I am forty.

EEP!

I also got the crappiest present from a co-worker ever.
A cold.
He swears he didn’t double dip. He calls it dip and flip (using the other side of the chip)

“Hey its legal”
“Hey it still got my fanny sick!”

Personally, I think this just sucks.
NOT what I had invisioned as my graceful entrance into middle age.

On another note.
Spouselet gave me some great gifts to get the day started.
He saw my cubism meme and got me this fun magnet set so i can turn all my family photos into stuff worthy of Picasso!
A blank jornal (the man knows me)
A bookmark with a beautuful doggie on it
and a very sweet card.

I really want to go to the YMCA (even if I am sick) I think it will help.

Extroverted, Progressive, and Intelligent

32 Cubist, -22 Islamic, -6 Ukiyo-e, -17 Impressionist, 15 Abstract and -37 Renaissance!

Cubism was a 20th century avant-garde movement, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It revolutionized European art and inspired changes in music and literature. The first branch of cubism, known as Analytic Cubism. It was both radical and influential as a short but highly significant art movement between 1908 and 1911 mainly in France. In its second phase, Synthetic Cubism, (using synthetic materials in the art) the movement spread and remained vital until around 1919.

People that chose Cubist paintings as their favorite art form tend to be very individualized people. They are more extroverted and less afraid of speaking their opinions then other people. They tend to be progressive and are very forward thinking. As the cubist painting is like looking into a shattered mirror where you can see different angles of the images, the people that prefer these paintings like looking at all angles of a problem. These people are intelligent and they are the transformers of our generation. They look beyond what is seen into what things could become. They are ready to leave the ideas of the past behind and look at what the future has to offer.
